A driving force behind 4 Hero, Reinforced Records and 2000 Black speaks to Helena Star.

The work of dego is deeply woven into the tapestry of UK dance music. As one half of 4 Hero, alongside Marc Clair, he made some of the most influential breakbeat hardcore tracks of the rave era, before spearheading the style's transition into jungle and drum & bass. Their label Reinforced remains a pillar of dance music history, while 4 Hero and Tek 9 productions from the latter half of the '90s laid the blueprint for the sound known as broken beat.
Under the dego alias and with the label 2000 Black, he merges live instrumentation with inputs from a wealth of black music forms, from jazz to hip-hop and soul. In conversation with Foundation FM broadcaster and DJ Heléna Star, dego talks over the breakdance community of '80s Covent Garden, the founding of the pirate station Strong Island FM, and the history of electronic black music in Britain.
