BBC Radio 1's longest serving DJ celebrates 50 years of broadcasting.
When Annie Nightingale became the first female DJ on the BBC in 1970, she had already had her finger on the pulse of the newly-developing youth and pop culture of '60s Britain. Now with a half-century broadcasting under her belt, her new memoir Hey Hi Hello shows how she remained a prescient reader of the times in all the decades since. Despite working within the establishment, she consistently caught on to and promoted important musical currents emerging from new subcultures, from punk to drill and acid house.
With a career that dovetails with a broad cross-section of musical developments across five decades, Nightingale is not short of stories and insights. In conversation with Martha Pazienti Caidan, we hear about being sworn at by Johnny Rotten, drill as the new punk, and valuable advice for aspiring broadcasters.
